blekko is a brand new search engine (still in beta) that promises to better narrow your search by allowing you to define the genre of sites you trawl for information.

It does this by creating “/slashtags” which you add to your search. So if you were looking for information about global warming, but only from climate skeptics, you would search “global warming /conservative.” Adding the “/date” slashtag will also sort your results by time of publication.

Check out the video for a more detailed explanation:

blekko: how to slash the web from blekko on Vimeo.

blekko offers a range of existing slashtags as well as the opportunity to create your own. It also has a “spam” button which you can use to exclude a spammy site from all your future blekko searches and an “SEO” link with site analytics information and the ability to compare sites you are searching.

They are also upfront about how they rank sites, making all information freely available on the site.

So jump in and get slashing! My first blekko search has landed me a mother-lode of niche search result gold, and definitely won’t be my last!:
