Ever spent a weekend devouring an entire season of a great, recently discovered show and been left with the anxiety over whether you will ever find anything as great again? (Or at least until they make a second season…) What if you could find other people who love that show, and search their TV favourite lists for more hidden gems?
GetGlue is a free browser add-on and iPhone app social network where users earn rewards when they rate and check in to TV programs, films, music and books they are consuming. It receives more than 4.5 million ratings and check ins per month. Users build up a taste profile and receive tailored recommendations every week, and can access top lists and find taste neighbours. GetGlue extends the premise of apps like Foursquare, which let friends know where they are and provide venue recommendations, to media. Profiles are updated in real time and users can view each other’s profiles for suggestions on what to read, watch or listen to next. The most active users and topic leaders receive ‘guru’ status, adding the incentive of competition.
GetGlue has just partnered with US TV network HBO (creators of True Blood & Entourage) and now offers unlockable branded stickers when you check in to the station’s top shows. Does this represent the first step of increasing brand involvement in check in social networks? Does adding a social element to media consumption make it more fun? Is this a service you would be interested in using? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
