‘Curiator’ is a new social network for rookie art buyers

Curiator is a new ‘pinterest-esque’ app currently limited to beta which aims is to help people discover and buy art. The idea behind the app, which launched yesterday at TechCrunch Disrupt San Francisco, is that when people begin to make more money they often start, or at least consider, buying art. However, it can be a nervous experience going to your first art auction or having faith in your own taste in the intimidating world of art appreciation and buying. Curiator allows users to select images of art to add to their own collection, to share with others via existing social channels, download it for themselves or email it, whilst also being able to follow other users.

What is particularly interesting about the app is that there are no future plans to ever implement ads. Co-founder Moenen Eubuer says, “We want the interface to be like a museum. When you start to put in ads, quality control is a challenge.”

Whilst the app doesn’t directly encourage path-to-purchase at the moment, its second phase plans to introduce a ‘marketplace’ where users can purchase art for sale, but also add art to their ‘Wishlists’ which may include museum pieces and those not for sale. At the present the app’s main goal is to create awareness of the art available locally and globally, and have people sharing it, further helping the art world to take advantage of the technology available and give potential art buyers the confidence to take their virtual collections offline.
