Google celebrate PAC-MANs 30th Birthday in style

Yesterday was PAC-MANs 30th Birthday and Google decided to celebrate in style by rebranding the Google homepage with a custom PAC-MAN game.

Google rebrand their homepage regularly for holidays and special events but ive never seen them roll out an interactive homepage like this one.  The PacMan Google homepage is a playable Pacman Game, complete with power-ups, game sounds, 2-player mode and a couple of different skill levels.  You can still check it out at http://maps.google.com/pacman/

I know PacMan isnt a complicated game, with simple graphics and basic gameplay – but I couldn’t stop thinking about the impact this would have had on the bandwidth use of Google.com.

The standard Google homepage is about 40Kb.  The payload on the PacMan homepage is about 120Kb.  Considering that Google.com has an average of 38 million unique hits per day – Now that’s a serious change in load.

Happy Birthday PacMan.
